Story:-
Nagraj Manjule. Big name of Marathi cinema. So far, he has directed only two feature films, but both of them were so amazing that a new brand of Nagraj Manjule was established. If it is Nagraj Manjule's film, then something good will definitely work. An audience like me, who went to watch the film with sky-high expectations, is sure to be disappointed when a movie full of clichés sees it. Heart feels bad too. Not that this film deserves to be rejected outright. But it is equally true that this is not a Nagraj Manjule brand of cinema at all. Let's talk in detail.
# Lafda Jhala.. really
Such sports based films are not new for the audience of Hindi cinema. We have also seen the story of underdogs becoming super achievers dozens of times. The glorification of the people who became the messiahs of the poor-Gurba has also done the big screen many times. The film industry makes rounds of slums every year or two. So basically every single frame seems like a see-saw. Whether it is the personal tragedy of the players, or the filming of a football match. You keep remembering films like 'Gully Boy', 'Chak De India', 'Gol'. From above the film is so long that the scale of the patience of the viewer gets spilled many times.
Many characters in the film seem to be half-written. No character arc is visible. Deeply irritated by Amitabh's social service, his son one day comes back full of pride. Even though the spirit behind appreciating the work of the father is understood, it does not get an explanation as to why it was necessary to leave the job? Similarly, a boy who has reached suicide in front of the train changes his mind at the last moment. If it leaves from there, it lands on the ground where the football tournament is going on. God's miracle is such that the goalkeeper of a team is not available and those team members also feed them. Then his charismatic performance was to come next. That's not the problem. The problem is that we don't even know the story of this guy. There is no explanation for who he is, where he has come from, why he wanted to die. Why did the policeman have a change of heart in the climax? no explanation. Why was Nagraj Manjule brought in if Bollywood spices were to be shunned so much? no explanation.

Like I said earlier, the film is not worth rejecting outright. Some things are good. The first number in the list of these things is the music of Ajay-Atul. The film scores literally on this front. All the songs of the film are good. Be it the title track, the song 'Lafda Jhala' or the soft motivational song 'Badal Se Dosti'. Ajay-Atul have shown every free kick by converting it into a goal. Lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya create tremendous impact in many places.
Another good thing is the originality of the language in the film. The kind of Hindi spoken by the people of Maharashtra, it has been threaded in dialogues in a very genuine manner. The presence of Nagraj Manjule is felt here. Words like Ghamela can be spoken by such a person who has lived in Maharashtra. Calling flute as Basri is also Hindi of typical Maharashtrian man. The film seems to be true to script on this front.
Some scenes in the second half are related to the paperwork of the players. Passport has to be made but there is no paper proving citizenship. The struggle to achieve them is interesting. Here also you will find the footprints of Nagraj Manjule. But only for a short time.
# How was the work of the actors?
On the acting front too many faults cannot be taken out. Well, Amitabh can do such roles even in his sleep. The gang that came from the slum also acts well. Their casting is good enough. There is a lot of potential in the actor who plays the chieftain of 'Jhund'. People would like to see him even further. Senior actors like Kishore Kadam, Chhaya Kadam also carry their role easily. Sairat's famous couple Akash Thosar and Rinku Rajguru did not get much space, but both are fine as much as they got. However, Akash's character also felt the need to write more clearly. Rinku is great.
Overall the acting is good in 'Jhund', the casting is good, the director is good but as a package the film has nothing new. The film doesn't even reach near 'Fandry' or 'Sairat'. In such a situation, the viewer who reached with such high expectations feels a bit cheated. The rest of the review is in your hands and the film is in theatres. See for yourself, decide.
